State invests in safe routes to school for Hawai‘i’s keiki

Investing in Safe Routes to School demonstrates the commitment to safety in our communities, and that’s why Ulupono Initiative applauds the authorization of more than $13 million in the State Budget Bill, Act 250 (2025), toward projects that help make it safer and easier for keiki to walk, bike, and roll to school.

Cooking up change: school regional kitchens to boost local agriculture

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) recently shared its plans for a network of regional centralized kitchens across the state. These facilities will modernize school meal production and create new opportunities for Hawai‘i’s farmers. HIDOE serves more than 103,000 school meals each day and plans include opening two regional kitchens on Oʻahu, two on Hawaiʻi Island, and one each on Kauaʻi, Maui and Molokaʻi.

Hawaiʻi celebrates National Drive Electric Month this September

From Sept. 12 to Oct. 12, communities across Hawaiʻi will join the nationwide celebration of National Drive Electric Month. Sponsored locally by Ulupono Initiative, the series of events will highlight the benefits of electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, e-bikes, and more. Attendees will be able to see the latest models up close, take a ride or drive when available, and hear directly from people who have made the switch to electric.

Across decades, Hawai‘i’s educators, farmers and food advocates have championed a stronger, vital connection between our local food system and public schools. The vision is clear: nourish students with fresh, local meals and provide stable, reliable opportunities for island farmers and food producers.
