Key legislative priority bills enacted into law

Gov. Josh Green, M.D. signed a series of landmark bills this summer, marking significant progress on key sustainability initiatives. These measures, emerging from the 2025 legislative session, align closely with Ulupono Initiative's mission to foster a more sustainable and resilient Hawai‘i in the areas of local food production, renewable energy expansion, and improved freshwater resource management.

Nearly 30 acres of land preserved for generations of farmers

Twenty-eight acres of land are now protected permanently as farmland after the completion of the conservation easement. Island Harvest, in partnership with the Hawaii Land Trust (HILT) and the Natural Resources Conversation Service (NRCS) began the process of purchasing the conservation easement in 2020. In addition to NRCS, Ulupono Initiative, the Freeman Foundation and other donors provided funding to purchase the easement.

Lā ‘Ulu Breadfruit Day festival returns to Maui after hiatus

Mark your calendars for a long-awaited celebration of Hawaiian culture and agriculture! Lā ‘Ulu Breadfruit Day is set to make its return on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. This beloved community event, dormant since 2019, promises a day filled with education, local crafts, and the star of the show — ‘ulu (breadfruit).

Kaua‘i works to create a walkable community

Kaua‘i’s year-round pleasant climate is ideal for pedestrians, making walking an attractive transportation choice. Recognizing this potential, the County of Kaua‘i has launched a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing walkability across the island. These projects seek to create safer, more accessible pedestrian infrastructure, encouraging residents and visitors alike to embrace walking as a primary mode of transportation. It also reduces residents’ dependence on cars just to get around in their own communities.

Public Safety Power Shutoff program is a call to embrace on-site energy solutions

Hawaiian Electric recently rolled out its Public Safety Power Shutoff program statewide. As part of this program, the company may shut off power in certain areas it identifies as high risk for wildfires during high winds and dry conditions.

Governor Josh Green, M.D., is partnering with the Ulupono Initiative as part of the Governor’s Investing in Hawai‘i’s Future, a collaboration between federal, state, and community partners to maximize federal funding for the state. The new partnership will provide tailored technical assistance to state departments and agencies to strengthen their ability to apply for and secure federal awards.
