Greg Gaug
Named interim president of Ulupono Initiative
As we look toward Hawai‘i’s sustainable future, Greg Gaug has been named interim president of Ulupono Initiative, effective Jan. 1, 2026. This elevation from within ensures a seamless leadership transition as he succeeds Murray Clay. Greg’s deep, long-standing commitment to Ulupono’s mission positions him to guide the organization into its next chapter.
"I am deeply honored and humbled by the opportunity to take on this role and lead an amazing, hardworking team that is dedicated to making a difference throughout Hawaiʻi. I look forward to continuing our meaningful work and upholding our commitment to a sustainable and resilient future for our islands’ communities.”
Championing a resilient Hawaiʻi
Greg joined Ulupono Initiative in 2012, serving most recently as vice president of investments and analytics. As a member of Ulupono’s management team, he helped lead the overall strategy and planning efforts of the organization. Greg has worked on a variety of projects, such as supporting Shake Energy and the Ho‘āhu Energy Cooperative Molokai to build the island’s first community solar project. He also helped expand clean transportation choices through the launch of Biki by Bikeshare Hawai‘i, which is now the sixth most-utilized system in the country.
Greg was recognized as one of Pacific Business News’ 'Forty Under 40' and a graduate of the Pacific Century Fellows Program. Greg earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD in Singapore.
Continuing a legacy of service
This transition follows the announcement that Murray Clay will step down from his role as president after more than 14 years with the company, including 13 years as its senior leader. Reflecting on his decision to move to the mainland to be closer to family, Murray shared his full support for Greg as his successor.
“It has been the honor of my professional career to lead Ulupono Initiative, moving the needle toward a more self-sufficient and resilient Hawaiʻi. I am confident our Ulupono team will continue to adapt and grow with Greg at the helm. Having been an integral part of our management team for the past 13 years, Greg has my full confidence in his abilities and I am excited to see him take this well-deserved step.”
Building impact
Sunshine Topping, chair of Ulupono’s board of directors, expressed enthusiasm and support for the organization’s next phase.
“Murray’s dedication has been instrumental in shaping Ulupono into the impactful organization it is today, and we thank him for his tireless service to Ulupono and the people of Hawai‘i. We are confident in Greg’s ability to lead the team as we look to the future and new opportunities on the horizon”
