Cottage Food Business Working Group Report
Hawaii Cottage Food Industry Working Group
Local Food Production
Why We Invested
To set frameworks for growing Hawaii’s cottage food industry while protecting public health
Representatives from the cottage food industry gathered in Honolulu to discuss the current regulatory framework governing the sale of homemade food in Hawaii. The purpose was to develop draft recommendations for a new legal framework to promote growth in Hawaii’s cottage food industry while protecting public health.
Our Partner
The Hawaii Cottage Food Industry Working Group was created in 2014 as a result of a legislative mandate. Along with Ulupono Initiative, participants included representatives from the Hawaii Departments of Agriculture and Health and the cottage food industry. The Kohala Center served as the moderator for the Working Group.
The 40-page report outlined actionable recommendations on:
- Local food production for Hawaii’s economic development and food security
- Food safety education and training
- Proper product labeling
- Permitting and regulatory compliance
- Hawaii Department of Health-relevant laws and regulations
