Why We Invested
To expand the range of farm fresh products through a working ulu (breadfruit) orchard
Anoano Farms is helping to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of the ulu, or breadfruit, crop in Hawaii. A thriving ulu industry will lead to more locally produced food and could reduce the cost of animal feed.
Our Partner
The Kohala Center worked with local farmer Max Bowman of Anoano Farms to establish a commercial ulu orchard on a nine-acre lot in Paauilo on Hawaii Island and provide analysis of the orchard cost of production, in order to stimulate ulu production statewide.
How We Partnered
Funding support, including a grant provided through the Ulupono Fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation

"Ulupono Initiative was a flexible lender, willing to work with us to craft terms that were workable in an agricultural operation. Their support allowed us to expand breadfruit production on Hawaii Island, an exciting and somewhat experimental commercial crop.”
