Member, Board of Directors
As someone who grew up in Hawaii and is now raising my family here, I’m excited to help support Ulupono Initiative’s work to strengthen our community so that future generations can enjoy our island home as much as we do.
Randy Ching leads The Omidyar Group’s efforts in Hawaii, which span several initiatives within the government, civic, and social sectors. In this role, Randy collaborates with organizations and teams to identify and pursue opportunities that benefit the people of Hawaii. Randy’s curiosity and passion for exploration, discovery, and practical application distinguish his approach, and help foster creativity and collaboration with colleagues and partners.
For nearly 15 years, Randy has held founding and leadership roles across various TOG organizations, most recently partnering with Pierre Omidyar and Alex Poon to create UP2398, a venture firm known for its hands-on approach with seed-stage founders. Prior to that, he and Pierre co-founded Honolulu Civil Beat, an online investigative news outlet dedicated to producing journalism with a purpose. Randy also served as Chief Operating Officer of First Look Media, an independent media company empowering the most ambitious voices in journalism, arts, and entertainment. Today, Randy serves on the First Look and UP2398 boards, as well as other boards related to UP2398’s investments.
Prior to his work with The Omidyar Group, Randy spent nearly eight years with eBay, beginning as a product manager in 1999. He later held a number of senior-level positions, culminating his tenure as Vice President & General Manager, Global Classifieds. Before joining eBay, he sharpened his business and legal skills as an associate with two San Francisco law firms. Randy earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern University, and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. Born and raised in Honolulu, he is honored to once again make Hawaii his home and contribute to the state’s future.
