Five new zero-emission buses in operation on Oahu
Sep 27, 2023
There are five new electric-battery buses in operation on Oahu that will provide transportation options for tourists and children. The buses debuted in July and were acquired through the Diesel Replacement Rebate (DRR) program, which offers up to 45% rebates for replacing diesel vehicles with electric or hydrogen equivalents.
The DRR, supported by funds from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust and the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, has allocated approximately $3.2 million in rebates for eight vehicles, including buses and a forklift. The initiative is one of several that contribute to Hawaii’s renewable energy and decarbonization goals, which are facilitated by the Hawaii State Energy Office, Hawaii Department of Health, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The program aims to ease the transition to zero-emission alternatives for businesses and entities, benefiting both customers and communities.
“We are absolutely committed to pursuing climate change strategies that are equitable, culturally responsive and resilient,” Gov. Josh Green said in a news release.
