SPOTLIGHT: ‘Walking bus’ on a roll toward better attendance, stronger community

Fern Elementary School’s Principal Glen Miyasato gets his daily steps in each morning with a unique initiative — a walking school bus that escorts students safely to campus. This program, along with similar efforts at neighboring schools, is boosting attendance and fostering stronger connections between students, parents and staff. It has also inspired Principal John Hamilton of neighboring Kalihi Elementary School to start his own bus route with students.
