Join the Multimodal Movement — HIBIKE and Hele-On

Nov 28, 2023

In this month’s Multimodal Monday episode on KITV’s Island Life, we travel to Hawaii Island to feature a great multimodal program that helps residents and visitors, alike, get around town.

In the episode, we learn how the County of Hawaii has teamed up with non-profit People for Active Transportation Hawaii (PATH) so folks can use the bikeshare system (HIBIKE) for the first and last mile of their commute for free when they ride Hele-On. This is the first type of collaboration between two transportation choices. Mayor Mitch Roth also shares progress Hilo has made in the area of building a multimodal system.

The year-long Island Life Multimodal Monday series, which kicked off in January, highlights the benefits of using multimodal transportation choices, such as a bus, bicycle and rideshare, among others. Viewers see how everyday multimodal transportation users go about their day without driving a car and how making the choice isn't difficult, which helps to reduce carbon emissions and traffic.

Another significant benefit of not owning a car is saving money on gas and maintenance. In Hawaii, personal vehicles cost an average of $16,200 per household per year. Factoring in all public costs (state and county expenditures, social and economic trade-offs, and real estate value of land set aside for roadways and parking), the total comes to an estimated $40,600 per household per year.
