Kailua Elementary students learn how to become stewards of water conservation
Jun 25, 2024
When water thrives, we thrive. Understanding the source of water and learning how to conserve it are essential steps towards protecting the health and well-being of wai, our precious water.
In this episode of Everything Starts with Wai, Kailua Elementary third grade teacher Danielle Asing shares about her engaging approach to helping her students learn about the water cycle and how it’s connected to Hawai‘i’s diverse ecosystem.
You’ll also hear from Lorna Heller of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, who taught Asing’s class about how they can help ensure water thrives as they do their part to take care of this vital resource. Heller explained where water comes from and led students through a water audit activity. After they tested fixtures on campus, they took the testing kits home to test their bathroom faucets, creating a meaningful real-world learning experience.
Asing and fellow third grade teacher Grace Kaiser created the lesson plan by partnering with experts from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply; the State Commission on Water Resource Management; One World, One Water and Ulupono Initiative.
As the next generation of water stewards grow, students are empowered with knowledge and practical skills, helping to secure a sustainable future for our community. To discover more about how you can contribute to the health and well-being of wai, visit the Board of Water Supply's conservation page.
