Ulupono Initiative welcomes its newest team member

Ulupono Initiative is pleased to welcome Matthew Derouin, an analyst on the Investments and Analytics team who will assist in conducting quantitative analysis across Ulupono’s priority areas — local food, renewable energy, clean transportation, and fresh water — for various investments or projects. Derouin’s day-to-day duties include assessing financial models and pro-forma financial statements.
Before joining Ulupono, Derouin worked as the senior auditor for the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters, Operating Engineers Local 3, and Roofers Union Local 221. His main objective in those roles was to ensure that union members were receiving their entitled fringe benefits from their employers.
Born and raised in Hawaii, he is a Kamehameha Schools graduate and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance from the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Outside of work, he enjoys the ocean and surfing, paddling and swimming. He also speaks conversational Hawaiian. He and his wife, Kellyna, live in Honolulu.
Derouin is excited to join the Ulupono team where he said he can focus on making Hawaii a better place for future generations.
“Growing up in Hawaii, you are always taught to mālama your family, community, and the ʻāina,” he said. “I love how Ulupono displays this core Hawaiian by exploring options to best use/cultivate natural resources for the benefit of all Hawaii residents. When you mālama the ʻāina, the ʻāina will mālama you.”
