Join the Multimodal Movement — Walking
Apr 24, 2023
In this month’s Multimodal Monday episode on KITV’s Island Life program, we feature how folks are incorporating walking as part of their routine to get to their destination. Mililani resident David Pettinger talks about how he makes it a choice to walk from his home to the store, which is about a 20-minute walk. It’s not only good for the environment, but also a great way to be outdoors and get some steps in. Meanwhile, Dustin Malama, traffic education specialist for the City and County of Honolulu, explains how the city is making the streets safer for everyone through its Complete Streets initiatives.
This year-long Island Life Multimodal Monday series, which kicked off in January, highlights the benefits of using multimodal transportation choices, such as a bus, bicycle and rideshare, among others. Viewers will see how everyday multimodal transportation users go about their day without driving a car and how making the choice isn't difficult, which helps to reduce carbon emissions and traffic.
Another significant benefit of not owning a car is saving money on gas and maintenance. In Hawaii, personal vehicles cost $16,200 per household per year. Factoring in all public costs (state and county expenditures, social and economic trade-offs, and real estate value of land set aside for roadways and parking), the total comes to $40,600 per household per year.
