Ulupono Initiative Promotes Two Team Members
Feb 05, 2026
Ulupono Initiative today announced the promotion of two team members from director to vice president. Kathleen Rooney has been promoted to vice president, transportation policy and programs, and Micah Munekata to vice president, government affairs. Both promotions recognize their exemplary excellence and a strong commitment to advancing Ulupono’s mission in strengthening and supporting Hawai‘i’s communities and goals towards resiliency and sustainability.
Rooney is Ulupono’s lead on transportation-related policy and programs in advancement of cleaner, multi-modal transportation choices in Hawai‘i. Her current projects include rightsizing parking policies, helping expand transportation choices and access to them and electrifying vehicles. Kathleen brings over 15 years of national experience in transportation and planning, combining both to advance community visions and goals in many diverse communities across the nation.
Munekata has been with the company for six years as its lead in government affairs. Prior to Ulupono, he served as the legislative coordinator for the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture, where he helped develop the state’s first Interagency Biosecurity Plan. Micah brings a wealth of legislative and communications experience particularly on development, land and water management, energy issues, and community engagement.
“Kathleen and Micah are invaluable members of our team who have worked tirelessly to advance Ulupono Initiative’s mission,” said Keith DeMello, senior vice president of communications and external affairs. “This promotion is well-deserved and we look forward to their continued leadership in our company and community.”
