Hawaii Bike Challenge post-event survey results

Participants in the Hawaii Bike Challenge were, like many Hawaii residents, folks who used their cars primarily for commuting to work. According to a post-event survey of challenge participants:

  • 47% of new bike riders participating in the Hawaii Bike Challenge cited commuting by car alone as their most utilized method of transportation to work.
  • 51% of occasional bike riders use their car to get to work.
  • 24% of regular bike riders use their cars to get to work.

Generous prizes for friendly individual and team competitions provided great incentives for Hawaii Bike Challenge participants to consider more bike riding. Still, many participants also recognized the many other good things achieved by bike riding.

  • 73% of participants said improved fitness from bike riding was the main benefit of being involved in the Hawaii Bike Challenge.
  • 69% simply wanted to enjoy the outdoors.
  • 30% wanted to improve their health.

The post-event survey also noted that the Hawaii Bike Challenge changed participants’ perceptions about biking.

  • 90% of new riders, 73% of occasional riders and 58% of regular riders reported they biked more often than they would normally during the duration of the Hawaii Bike Challenge.
  • 62% of all participants intend to ride more often for recreation, 26% intend to ride more often to work, and 51% intend to ride more often for other transportation purposes because of the challenge.
  • 82% of new riders intend to ride more often for recreational purposes.

Finally, the survey indicated participants most-frequently cited “more dedicated bike lanes” as a development that would enable them to ride more often to work or in general, followed by improved bike parking and end-of-trip facilities.
