Kauai School Garden Network
Supports all Kauai schools from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, with funding, technical and volunteer support.
The Ulupono Initiative provided support to Malama Kauai’s Kauai School Garden Network (KSGN) via the Ulupono donor-advised fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation to assist with its mission to achieve sustainability on the Garden Island.
Founded in 2006, Malama Kauai is a community-based, 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that focuses on advocating, educating and driving action towards a sustainable Kauai in the areas of aina (land), community and culture.
KSGN supports all island schools from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, with funding, technical and volunteer support for school gardens, local food in local schools and the development of wellness committees to address specific school concerns around healthy food and nutrition choices. Malama Kauai was able to provide support to 14 island schools with their on-campus school gardens, including creating new school gardens at three pre-schools and restoring six gardens at K-12 schools.
Why We Invested

This investment is part of Ulupono’s larger effort to fund school gardens statewide to increase understanding of where food comes from, why local fresh is best and how behavioral change can make a difference.
