Background

Local seafood is vital to the health, wellbeing, and food self-sufficiency of Hawaii. Learning more about the source of our seafood and eating sustainably harvested, locally produced seafood are among the most powerful environmental actions each of us can take on a daily basis.

Hawaii Seafood Month highlights the collective efforts of the commercial fishing sector and local businesses to promote sustainable, local seafood and vibrant fishing communities through the month of October. More than 50 restaurants and retailers statewide participate in this initiative organized by Conservation International Hawaii in partnership with the Hawaii Seafood Council

Throughout the month, local seafood featured at participating restaurants and retailers are linked to ThisFish an innovative online platform that allows consumers to trace their seafood from ocean to plate. Scanable QR codes will instantly connect to the story of the seafood including species, fishery, harvest method, and landing details as well as information about the fisher who harvested the seafood.

By improving our awareness of our food systems, we can play an important role in guiding the way seafood is produced and how fisheries operate. Supporting local restaurants and retailers that feature sustainable, local seafood leads to healthy ocean resources and a more food secure Hawaii.

Impact

  • Raises awareness of the importance of traceability of local seafood.
  • Supports healthy ocean resources and a more food secure Hawaii.
  • Allows the industry to begin to identify price / volume relationship with local seafood and traceability.
  • Encourages consumers to learn more about the food system.
