First Hawaiian International Auto Show

Categories: Energy | Transportation

HONOLULU (KHON2) - The First Hawaiian International Auto Show is a great way for the public to check out the latest vehicles and that includes electric cars! And this year, we’re offering the Drive Electric Hawaii EV Ride-and-Drive.

There will be six cars available for people to test drive – three full electric cars and three plug-in hybrids – including the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, Jaguar I-Pace, Honda Clarity, Toyota Prius Prime and Mercedes-Benz GLC350e.

There may be some misperceptions about electric cars – that they’re difficult or really different to drive, that they’re too expensive or that they may be small.

But there are more and more automakers coming out with new models that are comparable to gas vehicles in both cost and driving experience. In fact, you may find you’ll like an EV even more since they’re quiet and pretty zippy.

For full electric cars, there’s no more gas and oil changes. The only real maintenance you do is with your wiper fluid and tires.

And in the state of Hawaii, EV drivers get the benefits of free parking on the street and in state and county garages and access to the HOV lanes as a single driver.

Plus, new EV buyers can take advantage of the federal tax credit that’s up to $7,500. And EVs are a cleaner way to get around, so you can feel good about that.

At the Auto Show, there will be representatives in Drive Electric Hawaii t-shirts like this one and at the Hawaiian Electric Company booth inside the show who can answer questions about EV charging, rates and other benefits.

They will be taking sign-ups at the show so just come on down and bring your valid driver’s license. Our booth will be stationed in the main lobby and the test drives will be at the porte cochere.

On Friday, it starts at 1pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, it starts at 11am. All test drives go until 6pm.
