Electric car charger startup Scott Mercer on charging ahead

Scott Mercer has taken the electric vehicle charging startup Volta Industries from the back of a Kakaako auto repair shop, where the first charging units were built by hand, to a multi-state network that recently secured $7.5 million in venture capital financing that will allow it to nearly quadruple the number of stations in new markets on the Mainland, from 110 today to more than 400.

Mercer, who was a member of Pacific Business News’ Forty Under 40’s Class of 2013, founded Volta in Honolulu in 2010 with partner Michael Menendez, the company’s chief technology officer. The company installed its first free charging stations, which feature sponsored advertisements, at Pearlridge Center, followed by Ala Moana Center, Kahala Mall, Ward Warehouse, the Kailua Whole Foods Market and others.
